What is the British Skin Foundation?

The British Skin Foundation (BSF) is the only UK charity dedicated to skin disease research.  Aiming to help the eight million people in the United Kingdom with a serious skin condition, the BSF works closely with many of the country’s leading dermatology departments and patient support groups.

Adults and children with skin disease suffer every day, both physically and psychologically. Skin disease brings misery to their lives and puts strain on their families. Around 4,000 skin disease sufferers will die as a result of their condition. More research is desperately needed, but it is very expensive. That’s where the British Skin Foundation comes in.

We enjoy a close relationship with the British Association of Dermatologists, who put their administrative resources at our disposal.  This means every penny raised by the BSF goes towards skin disease research.  Last year alone, the BSF funded 18 projects to a total value of almost £500,000. To date, we have funded research into a range of skin diseases, including skin cancer, eczema, acne, psoriasis, vitiligo and rosacea.

As well as providing financial support to research projects, another principle aim of the BSF focuses on education. The BSF seek to inform the public about skin health issues through the media reports, literature and events.

For example, every year we get involved in Sun Awareness Week by distributing free information and resource packs to anyone who wants to learn more. The BSF also works with dermatologists to provide releases, statements and briefing material to provide skin health information for use within the media.
