British Skin Foundation Research Award: Genetics of Female Patten Hair Loss

Research conducted by Andrew Messenger, consultant dermatologist, with a grant from the British Skin Foundation (2004).

Research abstract:
Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is a common disorder which affects about 5 per cent of pre-menopausal women, increasing to over 30 per cent by the age of 70.  FPHL shows a strong familial tendency but nothing is known about the genes involved and we have little understanding of the pathogenesis of the hair loss. The aim of this study is to collect DNA samples from a large cohort of women with FPHL, as well as their affected sisters and parents, for analysis.
