Key details

There are areas of specialist clinical practice in Dermatology which overlap with other medical or surgical disciplines. The many specialties which intersect with Dermatology include Rheumatology, Infectious Diseases, Plastic Surgery, GU Medicine, Immunology, Oncology, and Psychiatry. Increasingly, joint clinics and combined services are becoming the principal model for managing patients with complex multi-system disorders. Funds from the Louis Forman Foundation have been released to fund a Fellowship which provides the award-holder a six-month period of training in a specialty allied to Dermatology. The aim of the Fellowship is to extend the individual’s clinical skills beyond the curriculum limits of Dermatology training and to provide the Fellow with a springboard for future collaborative working between complementary disciplines.

The British Skin Foundation grant was instrumental in advancing my research and expertise in dermato-rheumatology, providing protected time for clinical data collection and hands on experience within rheumatology services. It strengthened multidisciplinary collaboration and supported work defining the clinical and immunological significance of skin involvement in connective tissue disease.

Dr Aveen Connolly, Consultant Dermatologist, King’s College Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust

What makes the British Skin Foundation so distinctive is their ability to support ground-breaking dermatological research at multiple stages. From pump-priming pilot studies designed to open up new areas of investigation, to PhD studentships and clinical fellowships that train the next generation of scientists and doctors to deliver impactful research that benefits people and society, the BSF has led the way in creating the conditions for truly-inspiring research excellence that we can all feel proud of.

Dr Kehinde Ross, Reader (Associate Professor) in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Liverpool John Moores University

The British Skin Foundation has over the last quarter century been able to fund start-up projects for many dermatological scientists who have made important discoveries in the field of inflammatory skin disease and skin cancer. We look forward to supporting the dermatological research of the future.
